Why your race was slower than your sim: the roxzone
Your training predicted one time and race day produced another, and the difference usually is not fitness. It is the part of the race a gym cannot contain, and it has its own line in your official result.
It is a common story. The last simulation before the race goes well, the splits look strong, and then race day comes in slower, sometimes by a lot. The first instinct is to blame fitness or nerves. The usual culprit is neither. It is the roxzone, and it deserves to be understood rather than resented.
The roxzone is the transition area between the running course and the stations. In a race, it is not a doorway. It is a real stretch of floor that you cross on the way into every station and again on the way out, sixteen times in total, shared with every other athlete in your heat. The clock does not pause while you cross it. Official results list it as its own split, which tells you HYROX considers it part of the race, because it is.
A gym has nothing like it. In a simulation, the distance from the treadmill to the sled is a few metres, and nobody is in your way. That is why a sim and a race can never be compared wall clock to wall clock: the sim is missing an entire component of the race, and no amount of honesty about pacing changes that.
This is also why race simulation mode in Rep The Set deliberately does not pretend to time a roxzone. The time between stations in a gym is bookkeeping, kept separate only so your run and station splits stay clean. Calling it a roxzone would invite exactly the false comparison this article is about.
How much does it cost? It varies with the venue, the size of your heat, and how you move through it, which is why we will not pretend there is one number. But it is minutes, not seconds, and for many first-timers it adds up to more time than any single station. If you have raced, look at your own result: the roxzone line is right there, and it is usually a surprise the first time.
The useful response has two parts. The first is expectation: compare work to work. Line up your sim splits against your race splits for runs and stations only, and treat the roxzone as its own separate item, because that is what it is. A sim that predicted your work segments accurately did its job, even if the race total came in above it.
The second is that the roxzone is partly a skill, and skills can be practised even without a floor to practise on. Know the venue layout before your heat, so no metre is spent deciding where to go. Move through transitions with intent instead of treating them as rest, because the clock disagrees. And practise starting work immediately after running, which is the specific ability the roxzone quietly tests: picking up a sled push on legs that just ran a kilometre. That last one, at least, a gym simulation trains well.
For the work itself, the band calculator shows what Beginner, Advanced and Elite would clock on the full race, station by station. Those numbers are work time only, on purpose. Add your own expected roxzone on top, and race day stops being a surprise.
The gap between your sim and your race is information, not failure. The work segments tell you about your fitness. The roxzone line tells you about the race. Read them separately and both get better.
